Private Whale Watching Tours

From May through the summer, our San Diego blue whale watching tours offer rare encounters with the magnificent Blue Whales (Balaenoptera musculus) near La Jolla Canyon, along with Fin Whales and playful pods of White-sided Dolphins and Risso’s Dolphins.

When fall and winter arrive, witness one of nature’s great migrations as thousands of Gray Whales journey south. Our San Diego whale watching tours get regular whale sightings from December through February! 

Springtime brings Humpback whales breaching into our waters, following a seasonal bloom of sardines and anchovies! Fin whales, the world’s second-largest animal, also make an appearance! In short, there’s no wrong time to whale-watch in San Diego.

While both of our boats are designed for comfort and stability at sea, unexpected rough seas are a possibility. 

We do not recommend going on this trip if you have severe neck or back problems or are pregnant.

While we will do our best to give you a photo-worthy encounter, we can’t guarantee a close whale approach. We see some of the largest animals on the planet, and we give them their due respect. Blue Whales will occasionally circle around our boats, and we do our best to arrange a safe encounter that is entirely on their terms.

100% of trip payment is required at the time of booking to reserve your expedition. You may cancel a minimum of 48 hours before your trip for a full refund. We reserve the right to cancel any trip due to unfavorable weather conditions. You will be notified of any such cancellation, and we will work with you to reschedule at the earliest date feasible. If rescheduling does not work for you, we are happy to offer a full refund.

When is the best time to go Whale Watching in San Diego?

Whales put on a fantastic display in San Diego year round. Different species visit at distinct seasons, pending on mother nature’s whims.

Mega-pods of both long and short beaked dolphins are commonly found year round. Resident Bottlenose dolphins also frequently make an appearance. Minke whales and fin whales also show up year round.

GRAY WHALES! Gray whales migrate south along the California coast on their way to Mexican lagoons starting each December. Peak sightings of southward bound gray whales off San Diego typical occur in late January. Some gray whales even enter San Diego Bay! Playful, sociable, and easy to spot, these formerly endangered whales are a treat to see

Upwelling in the warming waters brings Humpbacks, Gray whales, Fin whales, and even Blue whales. They all migrate and feed throughout the continental shelves and undersea canyons off San Diego. 

BLUE WHALES! Summers bring blue whales, the world’s largest whale, just off the coast of San Diego. From May through August, these incredible creatures come to San Diego to feast on krill that swarm with seasonal up-welling. 

Autumn is prime time for the ever-popular humpback whales, as well as occasional sightings of Eastern Tropical Orcas.
