Frequently Asked Questions

At Big Blue Photo Expeditions, our mission is to provide a safe, comfortable platform to experience and document some of the greatest marine life off the coast of Southern California. The answers to some of our frequently asked questions below will help you be ready for your next expedition with us.

Reservation and
Cancellation Policies

How do I make a reservation?

The best way to make a reservation is through our website. Clicking on the BOOK NOW button will take you to the booking page, where you can chose the tour and time of your choice.

We limit our passenger list to 6 per boat, and we generally do private trips. That means you don’t have to go out with someone who don’t know, and you have the best chance of getting your shot without fighting for space.

We do private tours and can meet a variety of filmmaking and personal needs. Feel free to contact us if you have something special in mind.

Safety is paramount, and if conditions are not permissible, we may cancel a trip. If a trip is due to be cancelled due to weather or related safety concerns, we will let you know with as much notice as we can. Options for such cancellations may include rescheduling, a credit for a future trip, or a refund. That being said, we may go out in a light rain. Whales don’t mind getting a little wet.

At least 48 hours notice is required to receive a full refund, credit or reschedule of a tour. Less then 48 hours notice cancellation, no refund.

Guests should be at the gate and ready to disembark 15 minutes before the tour starts. Please call if you are running late, the dolphins hate waiting.

Expedition Prep

  • Where do we board the boat? Both the Protector and Scout disembark from Seaforth Marina in Mission Bay, 1677 Quivira Rd, San Diego, CA 92109. We meet at the gate in front of the marina. A big pine tree marks the way.
  • What should I pack? Our boats provide a safe, stabilized comfortable platform with access to shelter from the elements. We would still recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and warm clothes, as well as sunblock. We do provide some water, but we recommend bringing snacks on our longer trips. Don’t forget to bring a camera!
  • Will I get seasick/what if I have back problems? While we have a stabilized platform, seasickness may still be an issue. While we do our best to provide a safe, comfortable experience, those with neck or back issues may still have issues in heavier weather.

Whale Watching/
Marine Life

  • What’s the best time of the year to see whales? Different whales, different months. January through March, gray whales migrate in huge numbers to have their babies in Mexican lagoons. Spring and fall see a large influx of Humpback whales. June, July and August frequently see blue whales feeding and gathering off La Jolla Canyon and the nine mile bank.
  • Best time of day to see whales? Morning charters in San Diego usually have calmer seas and lighter winds, making it easier to see whales. We recommend checking out the marine forecast on the day of your charter.
  • What about dolphins? Our boat is officially approved by both resident bottlenose dolphins, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, and thousands of roaming common dolphins. There is generally a high chance of seeing them on our boats.

Miscellaneous

  • Can I get photos of my experience? Our first concern is your safety and enjoyment on any expedition you join on our boats. We generally carry professional cameras, however, and will be sharing images from our photo site at bigbluephoto.com. We are also happy to take photos of you with any cameras you may bring free of charge.
  • Where can I leave a tip? Thanks so much! There’s a tipping option when on the checkout page for your tour labeled “Tip your Captain.” We’re of course happy to accept cash. Tips will likely be spent on coffee and camera gear.
